~Intellectual Me~

Ive been sitting in my cube, listening to Miles Davis Sketches of Spain, reading about Andrea Dworkin and the penis as battering ram. God, am I incredibly intellectual or what?! Or what.

Im seeing her point. I really am. Then again, I love the way David M Friedman is presenting all sides in this book. Once again, that would be A Mind of Its Own A Cultural History of the Penis. Yes, Im still reading it. It requires great concentration on my part, the reading, most especially the chapters involving Christianity and Freud. And then again, I dont read at home. I always intend to, but it never happens.

Here are the names of the Chapters in this book:

I The Demon Rod

II The Gear Shift

III The Measuring Stick

IV The Cigar

V The Battering Ram

VI The Punctureproof Balloon

Clever, eh? Clever and appropriate. This book is a bit consuming. Or perhaps its just me, the way I throw myself into things, so passionate about this or that, even what appear to be little things, like a TV show, or a musicians life and work, or anything really. When Im interested, captivated, passionate, I am ALL over it.

Plus, Ive always loved psychology and anthropology, and this book, the penis book is filled with both. Its one of those books I feel like savoring. Reading and reading, never really finishing.

Another slow day at work. I think my phone went about 15 minutes straight without ringing. Nice. If youre in the mood to read, if youre not tough shit. Its fucking slow.

Tell you what though, when I do finish this book I am going to read something totally different, Im thinking I might read A Cooks Tour, by Anthony Bourdain (mmmmm Tony).

Dang if I dont have the nasty PMS symptoms, the suppressed immunity, the little fever, little soreness in throat, the achy body, the swelling, etc. and ho hum too. Thinking about this evening, whats for dinner, what will show up on the Big Brother 3 broadcast, will the free weekly be out at the liquor store when I go home for lunch, etc. Semi-bored, but willing to replace headphones, willing to read more about men and their penises. The more I read the more I am glad to be a woman, the more I am glad not to be involved with any penis in particular at this time.

Here are some quotes attributed to Dworkin, from the book:

From Intercourse - [The erect penis causes] a literal erosion of the [female] bodys integrity Her insides are worn away over time, and she, possessed, becomes weak, depleted, usurped in all her physical and mental energies until it ends in death.

Wow, huh?

I never quite thought of it like that. I seem to remember enjoying intercourse, even hard, depending on penis size of course. Size does matter. Too big is too fucking big, and too small well is too small.

This, too, is from the same book by Dworkin:

[In] real life men use the penis to deliver death to women The women are raped as adults or as children; prostituted ; fucked, then murdered; murdered, then fucked.

Its severe, granted - that was her real life comparison to pornography, to which she was VEHEMENTLY opposed. But, hey, I dont know. It is an invasion, by the very nature of our biology. I dont know that Ill be reading her books, or Susan Brownmiller or even the anti-feminist, Camille Paglia (though I own Sexual Personae). This is why I say that when I finish this I am switching subjects altogether. Every chapter, every few pages I close the book (usually because the phone rings) and I exhale, Whew!

Im getting back to it now. Believe it or not, its only 10:38 a.m. as I finish this up. Weve got a LONG way to go today
